The Silk Way Rally, a famous part of the Dakar Series, takes place two months earlier this year. It all starts in Moscow and finishes 7 days later in Sochi, the home of the next Olympic Games.

The race consists of 7 stages, and there are over 4000km to be travelled through destinations such as Moscow,Lipetsk, Volgograd, Astrakhan, Stavropol, Maykop and Sochi.

The race is being organised under the auspices of Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation. Overall, the race has a significant political support; Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister, visited the race in person last year.

The route of this rally will lead the competitors through sandy areas of Kalmykia desert as well as the Chazar prairie, which were amongst the most significant passages of last year’s race. The start of the race was brought forward this year in order to fit the teams’ testing and development programmes, and it also gives them more time to prepare for the actual Dakar race.
